The obvious way to keep an Instagram photo is a screenshot — but it rarely gives you the real image. A screenshot is limited to your screen resolution, crops out anything off-screen, and bakes in the Instagram interface: the username, like button, and caption bar all end up in your saved file. For a portrait shot on a small phone, you can lose a third of the actual picture.

Saving the file directly is different. You get the exact JPG or MP4 the creator uploaded, at the resolution Instagram stored it — commonly 1080px wide for photos and up to 4K for video when the creator filmed that high. Nothing is cropped, nothing is re-compressed, and there is no interface overlay. That matters most for carousels (multi-photo posts), where a screenshot only captures the slide currently on screen.

On Android, files land in your Downloads folder automatically and appear in the Gallery within seconds.
